Standardizing configurations
The Problem
SBC-West had approved Nortel’s new product line Optera Metro 3000 series. The PacBell LEC engineers had placed orders for various customized configurations demanding short turnaround time. The PacBell technical manager asked Telamon to assist in standardizing their configurations and improving the turnaround time.
The Solution
Telamon worked with SBC-West’s regional technical manager to come up with a few standard configurations that fitted to SBC-West’s network requirement and with provision for future expansion. This provided SBC-West the flexibility in deploying the system in any site with similar requirements. The standard configurations were also posted in Telamon’s eMOG (Electronic Modular Ordering Guide) for ease of reference on the Internet. Any non-standard configuration orders received were reported to the SBC-Westl regional technical manager. This greatly improved the maintenance and inventory control problem within SBC.
To reduce the order turnaround time, Telamon committed to “seed stock?a number of frequently used configurations. This ensured that minimum quantities of bay assembly configurations are available to fulfill orders at all times. The current turnaround time is within 3 days including shipping time. For any custom built configurations, the normal turnaround time is 5 to 7 work days provided that all required materials are available on the shelf.
Cost Reduction
The Problem
SBC’s regional technical manager discussed with Telamon on the concern of long lead-time, insufficient sales support or lack thereof and high price on the existing OSP cabinets manufacturer. He asked Telamon to work with another OSP cabinet on approved models to come up with the same configurations. The objective was to look for improvement in both service and price.
The Solution
Telamon worked with the new OEM on the configurations as well as how to improve the lead-time and services to the end customer. Knowing that there was competition in the market, the new OEM provided a very competitive price that was about 30% less than the original OEM. The new OEM also worked very closely with Telamon’s engineering department in streamlining the process for delivery of the cabinet. The new process shortened the lead-time from 10 weeks to one week.
